This survey samples some 16,000 establishments each month, asking firms how many people they are looking to hire, what sort of advertising theyâre doing to find workers, and more. Looking at data from 2000 through 2006, the researchers found that 42% of hires were happening at establishments that had said, just the month before, they had no vacancies. The take-away for job-seekers: companies often move fast to fill positions as they open. If thereâs a place you want to work, find a way to introduce yourself before a job opening is even posted. Because once companies decide to hire, you might not have much time to sell yourself. And a short window of opportunity is actually the best case scenario. The survey asks companies about vacancies at the end of the month, and then tracks how many hires happen in the next 30 days. This means that the raw numbers donât differentiate between a company quickly filling an opening, and a company hiring a person without ever officially logging a vacancy. Using some fancy economic modeling, the researchers found evidence that for a full 27% of hires, establishments never recorded a vacancy. Whatâs going on there? I want to die I typed that into the search box tonight. Google must have someone making this page of results very valuable. Its the most clear-cut, useful results page Ive ever seen. First of all, there is a phone number to call. I wouldnt call it. Of course Im ok: Im in a good marriage, I live in a great house on a gorgeous farm, I have two bright boys, and very supportive siblings. I am crying now. Im too overwhelmed. Before you jump right to the comments section trying to help me, let me tell you that Im traveling with the kids and Ive been in Aspen for five days without my anxiety medicine. I will have the medicine again in two days. I have friends I can always call. Melissa and Cassie will read this post and tell me I could have called them. But I wouldnt know what to say to them. I guess I could say, Help. I want to die. I know I could say that because they have called me to say that. Thats how I know there are others of you, reading this, who have felt like I feel tonight. When I found something to read online, I was so grateful. Can you want to die and also feel gratitude? I think it might be impossible. So maybe thats why the way Google organized the search results really works. I want to be a shining example for you but I cant cope. I want you to see that even though I had to live at my grandparents house because my parents hated me so much. Even though I did that, I am still a great parent. I want you to see that Im not ruined and Im not ruining another generation. I want you to see that even though I told you to never have two blogs, I can still do it. But I cant. I didnt write for two weeks. But I keep writing both blogs because I need the support system. And now maybe I dont even have that. I want to die because I feel like I cant do anything right. I am not sure what could possible make me not want to die except that I can help people. Im not sure what else there is. Which is crazy because Im doing this course this week about using personality type for making relationships work. Most of these people are complaining about their spouses, (or, worse, they think they have perfect spouses and its so easy for me to see what theyll be complaining about in the future) and I have so little patience. I want everyone to see that their relationship is fine because they are with someone who is just being themselves, trying their best. Why do I think its fine for everyone else to try their best but its not enough for me? I read a letter in the Guardian from a guy who is angry at his wife because she wont work. I understand why the guy is so upsetits scary to have to keep earning money. Its scary to me how expensive music lessons are. And how much money we spend every week in science and math tutors. I feel like a failure because I am not homeschooling like a free-and-easy, life-is-good parent. I am in overdrive. I realize now Im like all the other people in my course whose relationships are in trouble: doing the only thing I know how to do. Im an ENTJ and Im driven to meet goals and so I find the goals that drive my kids and then I dont take my eye off the ball, no matter what. Im just being me. But I am failing at it right now. I read a lot of forums tonight. So many depressed people are depressed because of their job. Its so common to read studies about how love matters more than work. And how you are not your career. And that money doesnt make a good life. But there is also research about how we can recover mentally from a lost limb better than we can recover from long-term unemployment. Not having a job is very very very difficult. So many people on the forums wrote about that. I have a job. I am so grateful that I have a job. This is my job. To write a blog post. To make a community that matters. So I am doing that tonight. And I have survived, to the end of this post, to tell you that when it comes to feeling like you want to die, life changes so fast. While I would encourage anyone - of any age - to always seek new experiences, challenge yourself, and continue to learn, there are a few other things Iâve discovered that you can never start doing too early. 5 Pâs To Make Your Post-Grad Years Awesome So without further ado, here are the five Pâs of making your post-grad years awesome: 1. People You meet all kinds of people in college and start to realize âwho you are.â By the time you graduate, make it a priority to connect with people who support you, guide you, laugh with you, and mentor you. Itâs important to realize we are never too old to have role models, and recognize that by finding these people, you will learn how to return the favor at some point, too. 2. Progress The idea of progress moves beyond just ongoing learning. This is about developing new skills and finding ways to apply them. Whether itâs by creating a project all on your own, by volunteering, or just through good olâ fashioned practice of those new skills, explore ways to exercise your talents. Find ways to show how youâve progressed over time and people will respect your willingness to grow personally and professionally. 3. Patience Patience is a virtue. Thereâs a reason thatâs a saying. Patience can be hard to come by, even harder not to lose, and more valuable than you expect. Thatâs not a saying (probably because itâs a mouthful) but it should be. Iâd like to preface what Iâm about to say by reminding you that Iâm saying it out of love: There is a strong chance you will not land your âdream jobâ right out of college. BUT (and thatâs a big but), this does not mean you wonât land an exciting, fulfilling, makes-you-grow, fun job. In this sense, Iâm not suggesting that patience means sitting around and waiting for your dream job. It means having patience enough to work hard and earn your way to the dream job, while being open to the idea that your dream job can, and will, evolve and change with you. For this reason, it also means having the patience to figure out the many ways your hard-earned skills can be utilized. Just because itâs not the job you pictured having right out of school does not mean you wonât relish the experience. 4. Presence Your presence is what creates first impressions, is how people connect with you, and often defines how people remember you. Unless you hibernated through your whole college experience, youâre aware of the many ways your presence is seen online. From social media to email to LinkedIn, people can learn a lot about you just with a simple Google search. What they find is up to you, so be aware of the brand youâre creating for yourself. But, since I know that you already know this (right?), I wonât dive too deeply into it. Instead, I want to remind you to focus on your real, in-person presence. Be IN the moment when you are with people. Give them the courtesy of your time, your attention, and your effort- without distractions! Whether you are interviewing, collaborating on a project, or just meeting someone for coffee, donât forget that you have something unique to bring to the table, and so do they. Let your presence, and your actions, show that you are confident, competent, and compassionate. Besides, you never know the impact you could be having on someone (or, they on you)... See #1. 5. Passion Youâve heard the term passion. Maybe youâve seen it used interchangeably with âpurpose.â Or âmission.â No matter how you name it, the idea is this: find something you care so much for, that it thrills you and makes you want to learn everything you can about it. Not every part of our career is going to involve our passions. Frankly, itâs even foolish to think that every âpassionâ we have can be turned into a career. However, by identifying the things you are passionate about, you can find similarities or themes and apply them to your work. Whether itâs helping people, doing physical work, traveling, writing, working alone, or otherwise, there is a way to incorporate what you love into your work. So, challenge yourself everyday to work diligently and passionately about something, and use this time to find the types of work that motivate you. Above all else, use the time after graduation to gain as much experience as you can. You donât have to know your place in the world the moment you graduate. Instead, spend time creating your place in the world and helping it grow!
